The Object of Our Faith
We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand. Romans 5:1–2
“Faith over fear” is a slogan you see everywhere, from T-shirts to face masks to hashtags. That’s an important, biblical truth. But there’s a greater truth to that catchy statement. It’s not so much that faith itself overcomes; it’s the object of our faith that overcomes, and that’s Jesus. I can have faith—faith in formulas, faith in other people, faith in a robust economy—but all those things fall short of the unchanging omnipotence of Jesus.
It is He who helps us overcome not only fear but our insecurity, confusion, doubt, pain, and dysfunction. As believers, we are connected to not only the Source of life but also Life itself. We are connected to our Savior by reading His Word, by praying, and by connecting with other believers. Anytime you get away from Jesus, you’re getting away from what matters. You’re getting away from the Person who went on the rescue mission to save your life.
“The only way to strengthen your identity in whose you are is to deepen your relationship with Him. Don’t just read books about the Bible; read the Bible. Don’t just listen to podcasts about prayer; pray. Don’t just immerse yourself in surfacy interactions; surround yourself with people who encourage and tell you the truth, even when you don’t want to hear it. Finally, don’t just fill your mind with positive affirmations; fix your eyes on the One who gave His life for you, trampled death, and is coming back one day.
What is one of your first memories of being drawn to Jesus?”
